This course has been designed to provide you with the knowledge and skills required to establish, maintain and evaluate the organisation’s work health and safety (WHS) policies, procedures and programs in the relevant work area, according to WHS legislative requirements. It takes a systems approach and addresses compliance with relevant legislative requirements.
It also applies to managers working in a range of contexts who have, or are likely to have responsibility for WHS as part of their broader management role. It is relevant for people with obligations under WHS legislation, for example persons conducting a business or undertaking (PCBUs) or officers, as defined by relevant legislation.

Providing a safe and healthy work environment is the best way to support and attract competent, productive workers.
Research shows that diversity in workplaces results in higher performance.
It is more effective to develop long-term strategies within an organisation when you have direct services that support workers who need support and reasonable adjustments at work.
It is also essential to have regular communication between employers and management in order to keep safety and health at the top of your mind.
Employers should:
1 - Inspect workplace regularly
2 - Make sure equipment and tools are safe and in good condition.
3 - Provide workers with training about how to safely do their job
4 - Have a hazard, near miss, and injury reporting process.
5 - Talk to employees about ways to promote a healthy workplace environment
6 - Communicate expected workplace behavior and conduct to prevent bullying, harassment, and violence
7 - Plan and test emergency procedures
8 - Keep workers updated about any changes and offer training opportunities when there is something new at work
9 - Have an injury notification system

This course Ensure a safe workplace (based on BSBWHS501) will help you earn the skills necessary to locate, adapt, adopt and communicate WHS policies that clearly define the organisation’s commitment to complying with WHS legislation
Our Ensure a safe workplace course is based on the unit of competency of BSBWHS501 . Whilst this course is not nationally recognised, it follows the learning outcomes and elements associated with that unit. The course contains

What will you learn by completing the training course?
This course will include an understanding of awareness of the relevant legislation and your responsibilities in ensuring a safe workplace environment .
Learning outcomes include:
- Identify duty holders and define WHS responsibilities for all workplace personnel in the work area according to WHS legislation, policies, procedures and programs
- Work with workers and their representatives to set up and maintain participation arrangements according to relevant WHS legislation
- Promptly provide information about the outcomes of participation and consultation to workers and ensure it is easy for them to access and understand
- Develop procedures for ongoing hazard identification, and assessment and control of associated risks
- Include hazard identification at the planning, design and evaluation stages of any change in the workplace to ensure that new hazards are not created by the proposed changes and existing hazards are controlled
- Develop and maintain procedures for selecting and implementing risk controls according to the hierarchy of control and WHS legislative requirements
- Identify inadequacies in existing risk controls according to the hierarchy of control and WHS legislative requirements, and promptly provide resources to enable implementation of new measures
- Identify requirements for expert WHS advice, and request this advice as required
- Use a system for WHS record keeping to allow identification of patterns of occupational injury and disease in the organisation, and to maintain a record of WHS decisions made, including reasons for the decision
- Measure and evaluate the WHSMS in line with the organisation’s quality systems framework
- Develop and implement improvements to the WHSMS to achieve organisational WHS objectives
- Ensure compliance with the WHS legislative framework to achieve, as a minimum, WHS legal requirements

The course is typically designed to be completed in a minimum of four hours. However, the exact length of the course may depend on your ability and prior knowledge around the subject.

What Accreditation Will You Get?
After completing the Ensure a safe workplace course , an assessment is conducted to determine if you have understood the information presented during the training course. If you pass this assessment, you receive a Certificate of Completion.
IMPORTANT NOTE whilst this course is based on the learning outcomes of the course provided, it is important to note that it is not a Nationally Recognised Statement of Attainment unless you opt for that option. Nationally Recognised training is only really required If you specifically require that unit of competency for a qualification or licence (typically this will require a practical component, further assessment and increased costs).
This course has been designed to comply with the best practices of national health and safety standards. Terminology has been chosen for clarity and ease of comprehension across jurisdictions. For example, ‘employer’ has been used to signify the broader term ‘PCBU’, while ‘WHS’ represents both work and occupational health and safety.

A Certificate of Completion is issued on successful completion of the course and you are required to get an 80% pass mark to be deemed as understanding the content. It is recommended that training is conducted every 2 years to stay refreshed.
