From an acclaimed Indigenous chef comes an extraordinary cookbook that weaves powerful storytelling with 125 intertribal recipes to heal our bodies and restore our foodways--featuring a foreword by bestselling novelist and fellow Oaklandian Tommy Orange.

Chef Crystal Wahpepah has used her growing platform to tell the little-known history of Oakland's tight-knit Native American communities, which were relocated from reservations across the country to the San Francisco Bay area in the 1950s. Crystal's powerful message to reconnect to our foodways and transform generational trauma into strength as well as her healing dishes have been seen on Food Network's Chopped and Beating Bobby Flay.

The rise of corporate agriculture around the world relies on singular and often genetically modified monocultures plus lots of chemicals and soil additives to produce massive crop yields. And while this approach may economically make sense on paper to feed multitudes at the lowest price point possible, it has harmed our physical health, emotional well-being, and the very creation that supports life. This truth applies not just to Indigenous people, who have been harmed by the federal commodified foods program, but to all of us who have come to rely on cheap and easy processed foods to feed our families. We no longer get the nutrients we need from our food and spend lots of money on supplementing our diets. We develop chronic diseases that can be avoided and even cured through eating habits.

Eat with the seasons, cure your disconnection with the land, and cook colorful, delicious food rooted in the oldest traditions including:

  • Three Sisters Veggie Bowls
  • Sweet Blue Cornbread with Huckleberry Compote
  • Indigenous Popcorn Balls with Edible Flowers
  • Strawberry-Sumac Salad with Maple-Sage Vinaigrette
  • Bison Roast with Chokeberry Rub
  • Smoked Salmon Dip with Red Chilies and Chips
  • Acorn Muffins, and much more

A Feather and a Fork includes 125 recipes developed in collaboration with ethnobotanist and food sovereignty advocate Linda Black Elk to explore the environmental, spiritual, physical, and social benefits of each dish as well as raise awareness of and support for indigenous food producers who are preserving heirloom foods and traditions.

Super cute, comfortable, practical, love that they are slip on
Size: 10.5, Color: Tobacco/Black
I have worn these 2-3 times already. The first day was a school/work day so I was on my feet 9 hours and the only issue I had was with the side of the boot rubbing against my ankle. I just make sure I wear socks high enough to cover my ankles or jeans that go into the boots now for long wear days. Absolutely love them! They keep my feet dry in this snow( we live in Michigan). I had been looking for a pair like this for awhile now and was getting super frustrated that I couldn't find my size in any that I liked. I saw that they had these available in a 10.5 and I wear 11. I looked at the Sorel website reviews (since the amazon ones weren't super helpful on sizing) and they said that the boots ran big so I took a chance on the 10.5 fitting me. They fit perfect. I have long narrow feet but I could see where they would be tight or uncomfortable on someone with wider feet. I've been trying to find a pair for my mom now since she has boot envy.

Excellent quality!!!
Size: 10, Color: Ocean Breeze
Wow great quality!!! You get what you pay for that’s for sure!! The fabric is heavy-ish-indicative of quality fabric. Fit is spot on. I’m a barely size 10 (5’6” 160 lbs) and these shorts deliver!! The stretch is just perfect enough for comfort. Excited to wear these next summer!! Will watch for more sales so I can grab a couple more pairs. If you’re on the fence, get them!!

Love!
Size: 10, Color: Sailors Red
The quality is excellent. They are more of a faded red. I ordered a 10 worried they might be snug but that was a mistake. I should have stuck with my normal size 8. (I purchased an Amazon brand of this style that runs small and the size 10 feels more like an 8.) I love the length-not too short and not too long. They are sturdy cotton. There is not any stretch to the fabric. I’m giving them to a friend. I actually tried to shrink them by washing them in hot water and hot dryer but it didn’t make them fit me any better. Since they were already too big, I can’t really say if they shrunk by doing this. They weren’t huge on me before washing and seemed to fit the same way after. I tried wearing them all day and they seemed to loosen up even further. I was continuously pulling them up. I really feel like the sizing is accurate and you can be pretty confident of ordering your regular size. I’ve already reordered the size 8. I’ll update my review if there any issues with that size.

Unattractive but well made
Size: 4, Color: Sand
The style was unflattering overall. The shorts fit well in the waist, legs, and seat; they just made me look masculine which is not the look I was going for. For reference I am 5’7, 135#, and purchased a size 4 (which again, fit me well). I’m not sure if the issue was the length, or maybe they just down have a flattering cut - they are very boxy and hide any curves I have. 3 stars because the fit was good and they are well made. But just not attractive.
